Games

I am currently developing an asynchronous workshop series intended to introduce learners to the Unity game engine. This project is being done in collaboration with a colleague at George Washington University’s Gelman Library. The tutorial videos follow along as we create an original video game to illustrate the development process. Once completed, we anticipate releasing the game along with the completed workshop series.

I am also developing a prototype/tech demo of an Asteroids-inspired spaceship game. In it, the player controls a small spaceship entrusted with escorting a larger ship through a treacherous asteroid field. Using projectiles, the player must destroy asteroids and prevent them from colliding with either ship.

This prototype is an experiment in random generation. It is being developed in the Unity game engine.

Made by a team of six, Sapience was my MFA capstone project and took a year to complete its first chapter. It is a side-scroller game that takes place in the last city on Earth.

With humanity all but wiped out, this city is inhabited by humanoid robots built to replace the loyal employees of the megacorporation, Sapience Inc. Far above the city floats another which is home to Sapience’s board members and executives, the last humans on Earth. Play as robotic siblings X3 and X4 as they explore their world, learn more about their places in it, and discover who truly controls their fates.

Sapience was created using the Unity game engine and the Fungus plugin.

In CS Fathom, play as a detective aboard a space station in the distant future. This interactive narrative tasks the player with uncovering the truth behind an accident aboard a cargo ship. Conduct interviews to determine what really happened.

I wrote CS Fathom using Twine.

Using basic shapes and colors, Shapes is an experimental game that examines the insecurities I have surrounding my dual identities of being white and Latino.

I created Shapes using Construct 3.

Lost in Translation is a prototype for a role-playing game (RPG) where the player is an adventurer who has just arrived in a new and unknown land and must become familiar with it, its people, and their language.

I created Lost in Translation with two other students at the American University Game Center. We built the game using Unity.

Him is a short game about emotional abuse in relationships. Inspired by one of the designer’s experiences with abuse, Him has the player interact with an unhealthy relationship through the mechanic of messages on a smartphone.

I created Him with two other students at the American University Game Center. We built the game using Unity.

C-Beam Survivors is a shoot ’em up (shmup) game with a touch of satire. In it, the player is tasked with captaining a spaceship sent to rescue survivors from a large space battle. The game uses typical shmup mechanics and styles to subvert some tropes of the genre.

I created C-Beam Survivors using Construct 3.

Menses: The Game is all about destigmatizing and normalizing periods, period hygiene products, and providing visibility to the struggles people with ovaries face.

This game, made in Unity, was created by a team of five in 24 hours for American University and University of Miami’s Newsjam 2019.
